A stock’s year-to-date or YTD return is the total return it has generated from the first day of the current year to the current date. A YTD return can be either positive or negative. A positive YTD return represents an investment profit, while a negative YTD return represents a loss. At this point last year, the S&P 500 was up a mere 6.1%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 3.3% higher and the Nasdaq boasted a 13.7% return through July 26, 2018. YTD Return. Then, divide the result by the price of the stock at the start of the year. Finally, multiply by 100 to convert the result to a percentage. For example, say the stock started the year at $90 and now it’s grown to $98.
