In the great majority of cases, crude-oil production is transported from platforms by subsea pipelines. Because most offshore producing areas involve multiple platforms and more than one operating company, the pipelines are generally common carriers. Once the exploratory drilling phase is over and geologists have determined that a petroleum reservoir is worth the massive expense, oil companies prepare to establish an offshore production platform. These rigs are designed to last decades, often far from land and in some of the most hostile waters on Earth. According to a new study from Rystad Energy, the United Kingdom led the world in cutting the cost of its offshore oil and gas production. For example, between 2014 and 2018 the United Kingdom cut Types of offshore oil drilling platforms include: Fixed platform: This platform is anchored directly to the ocean floor, Compliant towers: This type of platform works for drilling between 1,500 and 3,000 feet. Sea Star: The Sea Star platform is used when drilling between 500 and 3,500 feet. In offshore production, oil and gas are extracted from the wells and brought to the surface to a host facility above the ocean surface. The type of facility depends on the location, water depth, climate and the facility’s size and capabilities. Environmental, safety, stakeholder and financial issues are also
