Offshore staff LONDON – BP and its partners look set to approve the new Azeri Central East (ACE) platform next year for the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) oil field in the Caspian Sea, according to Wood Mackenzie. The project has been in front-end engineering and design since 2017. The world’s first paraffin factory opened in Azerbaijan in 1823, and the first oil field was drilled in the country in 1846. Azerbaijan was also the site of the first offshore oil field and platform in the world–the Neft Dashlary–which was completed in 1951 in the shallow water of the Caspian Sea. The oil field still produces today. Today, the region contains some of the world’s largest oil and gas fields. The Kashagan oil field, discovered in 2000 in Kazakhstan, was then hailed as the largest oil discovery in 50 years; it is currently the largest offshore oil field outside the Middle East. The Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan is the largest gas field in the Caspian Sea and among the 20 biggest in the world.
